Steps 1 and 2:
For my opportunity, I believe there is an opportunity in providing immediate recovery for people that are hungover. I know there are some solutions like that already but they aren't quite immediate. The unmet need is needing to feel better the next day immediately, after a night of drinking. This is a need for anyone who likes to consume alcoholic beverages. This need comes from the fact that your body feels worse after a night of drinking. Some things people are doing now to meet this need is drinking water before going to sleep or drinking pedialytes. I think realistically there's a 40% chance this opportunity exists because like I mentioned earlier there are already some ways to cure a hangover less quickly, so that might suffice for some people.
Step 3: For my prototypical customers, I interviewed 3 of my fraternity brothers that like to drink and have experienced hangovers before.
Step 4:
Customer 1:
Q: What is the exact nature of the need?
A: Whenever I wake up in the morning and I need to be productive but my hangover is hampering my productivity.
Q: When do you become aware of the need?
A: When I wake up in the morning hungover.
Q: How long have you had the need?
A: Ever since I started drinking in college.
Q: When did you first become aware of the need?
A: The first time I got hungover and a lot of assignments due that night.
Q: How are you currently assessing your need?
A: I make sure to drink a lot of water and nights that I know I am going to drink.
Q: How satisfied are you with the solution?
A: For the most part pretty satisfied.
Customer 2:
Q: What is the exact nature of the need?
A: I want to be able to drink without feeling hungover the next day.
Q: When do you become aware of the need?
A: When I wake up in the morning after drinking and feel utterly terrible the entire day.
Q: How long have you had the need?
A: Ever since I started drinking.
Q: When did you first become aware of the need?
A: The first time I had a hangover
Q: How are you currently assessing your need?
A: I drink pedialytes the morning after I wake up.
Q: How satisfied are you with the solution?
A: It works but it kind of takes a while, wish there was an instant solution.
Customer 3:
Q: What is the exact nature of the need?
A: I don't like feeling terrible when I wake up from drinking.
Q: When do you become aware of the need?
A: When I wake up feeling terrible
Q: How long have you had the need?
A: The first time I had a hangover
Q: When did you first become aware of the need?
A: The first time I had a hangover
Q: How are you currently assessing your need?
A: I eat a bunch of food and drink water before I go out.
Q: How satisfied are you with the solution?
A: It works sometimes but not all the time, wish there was a surefire way.
Step 5:
I learned that there is definitely a market for my opportunity. It might be smaller than I imagined because these people already have some solutions for the problem, but I could come up with a more effective and more quick solution. This most surprising thing that I learned is that everyone I talked to had at least some sort of solution.
Step 6:
already done
Step 7: My original opportunity is still definitely there. Wherever there are people that drink alcohol, there will be people that want a remedy to cure their hangover. My new opportunity is not more accurate though, it is actually less accurate because some people have solutions already, but those surveyed did not have a completely effective solution. For the last question, I believe entrepreneurs always adapt their solutions to the customer feedback because the customer is who decides if the entrepreneur will be successful. If you create something that the people want, you will be successful.
Austin,
ReplyDeleteI think your idea is very interesting and demand-driven. There is almost ALWAYS money associated with alcohol. Hangovers re super annoying and i'm sure anyone would love to find some super cure that works even better than pedialyte. I thought interviewing your fraternity brothers was the perfect "stereotypical customer". I agree with you, on how you must adapt to the customer, it is so important. Everything a business does is based off demand driven by the customer. I think you have a great basic idea but the hard part would be figuring out what specific product you would produce to cure hangovers
Graham,
ReplyDeleteI think you've identified a very high demand market. The best options at the moment don't actually cure the hangover completely, but just help reduce the symptoms. This product would sell easily at colleges where time is so valuable and you don't want to lose most of a day to a hangover when you have assignments and exams to focus on. It's honestly surprising that nothing has been invented yet considering how long people have been drinking and how advanced technology has gotten.
